How to choose the correct kennel (or crate) size for your pet

There are several aspects that you must take into account when choosing the kennel (or crate) for your pet's travel, since it must be according to its size and, at the same time, it must comply with international regulations. Below you will find the key points to choose the size of the kennel:

  1. Dimensions: The most important thing about this aspect is that the kennel should be large enough for your pet to be able to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably. Based on your pet’s  size and weight, you should choose a kennel with a minimum space of 5 cm to 10 cm between the head or ears and the ceiling. If your pet is a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, you should choose a kennel that is one size larger than it would normally use, as there are several airlines that require it.

Bear in mind that the crate should not be excessively large because it will not provide the proper sense of security for your pet.

How to determine the right size of the kennel?

You should take into consideration the following measurements:

  1. Length: You should measure your pet from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (not including the length of the tail) and from the ground to the elbow. The length of the crate should be the sum of the length of your pet plus half of the measurement you got from the ground to the elbow.
  2. Height: You should measure from the ground to the top of your pet’s head or ears (if their ears are pointy) and the height of the crate should be at least 5 cm higher.
  3. Width: you should measure the width of your pet’s shoulders and the width of the crate should be at least twice this measurement.

2. Materials: In the market you can find many types of kennels, but not all of them comply with international regulations, here are some tips to make sure you are choosing the correct kennel:

  1. It should be rigid, preferably made of good quality plastic, with ventilation on all 4 sides.
  2. It must have a metal grille.
  3. It should have metal screws that secure the two parts (lids) of the kennel.

Kittens travel in standard sized crates, however we will let you know if it is necessary to use a larger one based on their weight.

If your pet is very large and there is no standard plastic kennel for them, we will supply a custom-made wooden kennel that meets all the airline requirements.

**There are some airlines that will require wooden kennels for certain dog breeds, please contact us for further information***.

With these recommendations in mind, you will be ready to choose the appropriate kennel for your pet’s travel, ensuring that they will be comfortable and safe during their journey home.
